9 Simple Steps to Get Your Office Desk Organized!

Kim Wolinski, MSW
"Dr. DeClutter"
http://www.drdeclutter.com/

9 Simple Steps to Get Back a Year of Your Life -
Through Your Office Desk Organization!

Do you lose time looking for items on and around your office desk . . . sifting through clutter?

It has been estimated that the average American will spend one year searching through desk and office clutter looking for misplaced objects.

It's so easy to just lay a folder, an envelope, the mail, a file, pens and pencils, post it notes and other paper on horizontal piles when they aren't needed immediately. It's so hard to find what you need when you need it, in those same piles!

When I work with my clients in their homes and offices I hear pretty much the same story each time, right after, "I'm so embarrassed that it's so messy and cluttered!" I hear that they are busy, have a family, have too much on their plate, don't know where to file or how to file, don't have a good filing cabinet or space, and so on. What they think is going to take several days to declutter and organize usually takes just a few hours and everything is back in its "home" and "system" and ready to be found when needed.

Here are some helpful tips to keeping your office desk, home or away from home, clean and ready to work on, finding everything you need when you need it.

1) Take care of mail immediately as it comes in the door. Open, sort, file, pay, take action, file, archive or trash (recycle).
2) Do not let magazines and catalogues pile up. Tear out articles you like, read, file if you need them for future reference, recycle the rest. Let subscriptions run out and don't re-subscribe after they are done. See if you can get the information online or the library.
3) If you can find the information you have in paper online, or you have it on the computer, don't keep the paper.
4) Pay bills online and stop the paper bills from coming in.
5) Have a designated inbox, but put everything from it away - file, reroute, mail, complete, etc. - by the end of the day, or at least the week.
6) Don't let small notes and post its accumulate. Take a notebook and use it for phone messages and ideas, keeping everything in one place.
7) Do not pile or stack horizontally on desks, tables, floors, file cabinets or anywhere.
8) Keep lots of open and clean space on your desk and tops of everything at all times.
9) Practice maintenance. Take 15-20 minutes at the end of each day and clean up your space, getting ready for the next day.

Enjoy the payoff for following these nine steps every day. Feel good, self-confident, open and relaxed, happier, not embarrassed, ashamed or guilty about not wanting anyone to visit your office or be around your desk . . . no more apologies! . . . and you'll be a great role model for others and family as you create and save time for better things!

Stop “Tolerations” From Ruining Your Life!

Kim Wolinski, MSW
"Dr. DeClutter"
http://www.drdeclutter.com/

I just recently heard this term, "tolerations" from a colleague. After I realized what it was, how it was used, I knew that I already teach plenty on the subject, since it's one of my weak areas. I call it "putting up with _____ (fill in the blank!)," or, as you may have heard me call it in my seminars, "being user-friendly!"

Do you tolerate, or put up with people, situations, events, experiences, habits, thinking and routines (to name a few) too much? Can you remember a time when you "had it," and said, "That's enough!"? That was the "shift" in stopping tolerations rule over your life.

I just recently noticed that when something happens about which I need to take action, or say something because I have feelings or an opinion, I kind of go on stun, or numb. I don't realize I have something to say until a day or two or more later! By then, I end up feeling angry, crying depending on the situation, and such. (Core here is, I don't like conflict and confrontation.)Then, I still have to deal with it because it's sure dealing with me . . . inside out!

Tolerations can be very small or large, but what is the same no matter what size they are, is that they steal your energy, time, money, ability to reason and act for your own good, causing unnecessary stress, frustration, angst and confusion - brain fog - as well as a host of other negative side-effects.

Here are some examples of tolerations:

- Tolerating a cabinet drawer that doesn't shut correctly and takes up time and effort every time you use it.
- Tolerating financial problems, yours or some elses, living in fear, guilt, anxiety, paranoia and embarrassment at times.
- Tolerating living with and walking around clutter, disorganization, mess, piles, heaps and indecision.
- Tolerating a friend who is wonderful most of the time, but rude, always has to be right, has to have the last word, controls or manipulates on occasion or embarrasses you, taking up your energy and blocking your joy.
- Tolerating your car that has engine problems, but you keep putting off getting it fixed for "later."
- Tolerating your weight, even though it's affecting your health, back and self-esteem.
- Tolerating a relationship with your spouse and their not helping out when your need it.

- T olerating a lock on the front door that doesn't lock easily and takes up your precious time and effort every time you lock and unlock it.

(Tolerating web programs, like this blogging site, or my website... that can kind of be rigid at times!! :-/ )

It's easy to "put up with" a lot of things, people and experiences. . . but at what cost?

If you could label yourself the classic "co-dependent", or if you grew up in a pretty dysfunctional family, you probably are a very big tolerator! You let people suck your energy dry with very little resistance, because you were programmed for it. Just say no, right? HA! What?! Sometimes you don't even know you need to stop something from happening until after it's gone on too long.

WHAT TO DO?
How do you stop tolerations from ruling your life?

1. Write a list of 20 tolerations.
2. Write at least one solution to each.
3. Start taking action on the solutions,
one at a time!

Without action, your tolerations will stay alive and well, taking you off track every day. Take action on the small, non-threatening ones first. Figure out what you need and fix the cabinet door and the front door lock, make the appointment to get the car fixed, choose a weight adjustment program (not diet!) and exercise to help your body. Take just one item from your list at a time and do something towards a solution.

You will notice small and major shifts and changes in your attitude and energy by taking action, taking charge and taking back your life on a daily basis.

Join my upcoming teleclass and learn more!
If you need support in understanding what your tolerations are and how you can fix, change and resolve them, I highly suggest you to to my upcoming teleclass on this subject.Click here for the teleclass information. (If there is no current program on Tolerations running, feel free to email me and request when the next one is! I'll put you on my list.)

Start Small and Feel Great! Organize a Chunk!

Kim Wolinski, MSW
"Dr. DeClutter"
http://www.drdeclutter.com/

Don't rush to organize the whole house when you just need to decide on ONE CHUNK at a time.

Think about some area, cubby or section of your house that needs a clean out and reorganizing attention. Let's start really small.

ONE CHUNK: Where you keep your pens and pencils. Whether they're in a "junk" drawer, cup, special holder or box of some kind, set your timer (mental or real) for 15 minutes and do just that ONE thing!

Clear a "sorting space" and dump out your pen cup (or open your desk drawer and pull out just the writing tools). If the cup or drawer itself is dirty, dusty or inked up, consider replacing it or giving it a good washing before putting your pens and pencils back in.

Now, go through each writing tool and decide:
1) Do I really like it? Do I use it?
Decide, keep to use, keep in supply storage or donate. (Yes. Baggy up all unwanted writing tools and give to a thrift store, school system, etc. The landfill doesn't need to see it "yet!")
2) Make sure it works.
Keep or trash.
3) Put all writing tools that you LOVE back into the container, drawer, cup, or whatever... that you LOVE... and is functional. Now, enjoy your day!

This seems like a waste of time to some people, but consider how much time you actually do waste by pulling out pens, pencils and markers that don't work time and time again! Too many writing tools can also be a great visual distraction. You only need a few good pens, pencils, markers and highlighers at any one time in your vision, unless you're an artist!

Have kids? Let them help and help them let go of their old crayons, markers and such that are too small, dry or unuseable.

Now. Go chunk away!!

Sorting TIP

Kim Wolinski, MSW
"Dr. DeClutter"
http://www.drdeclutter.com/

When you need space to sort, and your countertops, desk, table tops and maybe even floor is/are cluttered and full too!... just get out a towel, blanket or sheet and drape it over the top of the surface on which you want to sort. Or use an empty box lid or even plastic storage box of any size.

Just something that is clean and empty so that you can go through the sorting process with less visual distraction, confusion and oh, yeah... STRESS!!

The Second Right Answer... is Love

Kim Wolinski, MSW
"Dr. DeClutter"
www.drdeclutter.com

The time you spent wasting that you enjoyed was not wasted.
~ John Lennon

Nothing in life has meaning except for the meaning that we give it.

Think about that as you go through your day reacting to people, thoughts, things, events and experiences that are only happening to you in the way that you see them. What is meaningful to one person, good or bad, can be the complete opposite to anyone and/or everyone else. It can also be just neutral.

Do you react a lot? How does that serve you to feel good about life, relaxed and calm, at peace and in the joy of life?

Every minute you’re angry, you lose sixty seconds of happiness.
~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

I've been around many people who react about most everything. There's such a loss of life when that is a person's way of being.

Step back every time you begin to freak out! No matter how seemingly big and provoking something may seem, or small and sharp and painful. When you become angry and tight in your muscles and thoughts, holding love and feelings in, you hold everything and everyone else out.

Know that there is always a second right answer as to how to see anything and everything at any moment. Yes, it will take work at first! The second right answer can be love.
Someday, it can be the first right answer.

10 minutes of laughter = 2 hours of pain free sleep.
~ Norman Cousins, healed himself from cancer.

It’s always something.
~ Gilda Radner, as Rosanne Rosanna Danna. Lost her battle with cancer.

Although the world is full of suffering, it is also full of the overcoming of it.
~ Helen Keller

Shared joy is double joy; shared sorrow is half sorrow.
~ Swedish Proverb

The world breaks everyone, and afterward many are strong in the broken places.
~ Ernest Hemingway

It takes 36 facial muscles to frown, 13 to smile. Frowning physicians face twice as many mal-practice suits than those who smile!

Pay Attention to Self-Labeling!

Kim Wolinski, MSW
"Dr. DeClutter"
www.drdeclutter.com

In organizing it's important to label everything in order to find it faster, keep categories together and such. But when it comes to your life and your self-talk, be very aware of the labels you are tagging yourself with... that you may not want to live up to!

Negative self-labeling is an unconscious, programmed behavior. Everytime you say, "I am" in front of any sentence, you are labeling yourself that. Is "that" really who you are? Is "that" the person, the life and the experience you want to live out?

I hear many people, mostly women, who say things like:
"I am so fat!"
"I am so ugly!"
"I am not very good at ______________."
"I am always making mistakes and messing up."
And on and on.

These statements are actually abusive! Think about it. If someone else told you these things about yourself, you'd be hurt, angry and probably tell them off!

So, listen to your language, your self-labeling, and change it as soon as you are conscious of it. Change your statements and descriptions immediately to something positive, loving and self-nurturing.

Remember, whatever you say and consistently attach to the words,
"I am" you will become! YIKES! Take charge of your self-talk today!

"The root cause of suffering is identification with our thoughts,
the “stories” that are continuously running through our minds."
~ Eckhart Tolle, The Power of Now

Change Your Questions - Change Your Life

Kim Wolinski, MSW
"Dr. DeClutter"
http://www.drdeclutter.com/

If you really listen to your mind-chatter, you'll notice that you are constantly asking yourself questions. This is good! Questions lead to new answers and new directions... if... your questions are higher and higher quality questions.

Questions serve as a re-focus mechanism. Asking yourself new questions immediately changes what you're focusing on. They also change how you feel. And, in the long run, they should be guides to new options and directions.

Example: Weight loss
Instead of asking yourself limiting questions, like, "Why can't I lose weight?" Ask yourself higher quality questions, like, "What can I eat today that will be more nutritious and healthy for me?" Or, "What can I do to burn some calories today, even if for only 10 minutes?"

Change your questions to positive, life affirming and focused on new results in changed behavior and still more positive questions for forward movement.

Kissing: It’s a Good Thing!

Kim Wolinski, MSW
"Dr. DeClutter"
www.drdeclutter.com

HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY!

“The sound of a kiss is much softer than that of a canon - but its echo lasts a great deal longer."

"When words become superficial, humans make use of kisses."
~ Sigmund Freud

There are lots of good reasons to want to kiss and be kissed. But, did you know that there are side-benefits from kissing? Here are a few:

1) Burn Calories!
A passionate kiss burns 6.4 - 10 calories per 10 minutes (about one calorie per minute)… depending on the research. A long kiss makes the metabolism burn up sugar faster than usual. The calories burned of course depend on the intensity of your kisses. No matter, you do burn calories, so… kiss more, lose weight!

(NOTE: Doing the chocolate heart-box thang?… There are 26 calories in a chocolate kiss… do the math!)

2) Prevents Tooth Decay! (NO WAY!!)
Dr. Peter Gorden, Dental Advisor at the British Dental Association, explains. “After eating, your mouth is full of sugar solution and acidic saliva, which cause plaque build up. Kissing is nature's own cleaning process”, he adds. “It stimulates saliva flow and brings plaque levels down to normal.”

3) Stress Management.
A passionate kiss can relieve tension. It’s a great relaxation technique. It's almost impossible to smile and feel tense at the same time. Our emotions and body language are so closely linked and when your mouth is in a kissing position, you are almost smiling (and might be smiling and laughing in between). Plus, in romantic kissing there is love and anticipation and all kinds of deep breathing and body reactions… creating a great relaxation response zone to stay in as long as you can. Make sure to close your eyes! Shut out everything else and “be” here and now and one with your kisses! Ahhhhh, that’s so good!

4) Increases Fitness Levels.
Just like when you’re exercising, your heart is pumping, your pulse is racing. When kissing is exciting, you also release adrenaline into the bloodstream and your heart pumps more blood around your body, bringing all that blushed skin tone to your face and all other beautiful parts! It's a great cardiovascular workout!

5) Natural Face and Body Lift.
Kissing, lots of it… slows the aging process. It tones your cheek and jaw muscles, so they're less likely to sag. (Side bar: Anything else that you can think of to accompany kissing… can stretch, strengthen and tone too! Flexibility at every age is very important.)

6) Ups Your Self-Esteem.
Kissing is a great boost for self-esteem. In theory, when you're kissing, you're happy. You’re excited. You’re anticipating unexpected things to happen. And when you're happy and excited, you let go of the everyday routine and sometimes mundane thinking… you feel good about yourself, changing the chemistry of your brain and endorphin system for all- around wellness.

Whew…!

Enjoy kissing on Valentine’s Day… and every day.

Love is a Verb: Be a Positive Change-Agent in the World

Kim Wolinski, MSW
"Dr. DeClutter"
www.drdeclutter.com

Have you ever heard someone say, "It's not my job!" There are plenty of opportunities every day where we can pick up where and when someone else dropped the ball, trash, plan, project, idea, care or whatever. Doing it out of a neutral place is the challenge! No griping, anger, resentment.

Love is verb. Love for the planet, for mankind, for animal and plant and insect kind takes action, even in the smallest of ways. Do it and move on, or don't of course, but be open to doing it, no matter how big or small the task.

I pick up trash about 80% of the time. I've limited myself to 80% because I wouldn't get much else done if I detoured to pick up a cup or piece of paper or whatever every time I saw one! I just feel better when it's put where it's supposed to be. And, I bless, yes, bless the person who discarded it unwisely or accidently. It's not my job, but it is my planet.

Bert Brady makes a difference as part of the "Welcome Home a Hero Program" in Dallas, TX to welcome home soldiers coming off planes. Click to see this clip from national news:
02_FEB_07_ABC_DFW_Welcome.wmv

British tycoon Richard Branson offered a $25 million prize before the world's scientists on February 9 seeking to spur research into devising ways to suck greenhouse gases out of the air. Branson said, "Man created the problem, therefore man should solve the problem." It's not his job, but it is his planet.

What can you do to not just show love, but BE love... in action?

You don't have to have $25 million to allocate to an issue that was "dropped" by others, but you can give some time to fixing, picking up, putting back, sharing, helping out, volunteering, taking care of, etc.

So, even when it's not "our job," we can pitch in do our part, no matter how large or small, to be a positive change-agent in the world. Love is a verb, it is action. Do it, and move on! It's not your job, but it is your planet.

Love, Happiness and Friendship Can Serve Your Memory Well

Kim Wolinski, MSW
"Dr. DeClutter"

  • Are you lonely?
  • Do you isolate more often than not?
  • Are you part of a group, church, synagogue or club that you enjoy and where you feel like you "belong?"
  • Do you have several friends or family with whom you can "let it all hang out" pretty often?
If you have fun and are part of life each day in the best of ways, you are doing more than just enjoying yourself.

Researchers from Rush University Medical Center in Chicago reported this week that "Lonely people may have a greater risk of developing late-life dementia."

In their study they found that those who described themselves as lonely were twice as likely to develop the kind of dementia associated with Alzheimer's disease. Previous studies have suggested that people who are socially isolated or lack intellectual stimulation are at greater risk of Alzheimer's as well.

So... don't just sit there all alone! Get out! Find and make new friends. Organize your time and life around loves, creativity and mind active "belonging."

The Post Holiday Shuffle - Put Things Away!

Kim Wolinski, MSW
"Dr. DeClutter"
www.drdeclutter.com

Okay, it's the past half-way through January. Are you still lighting your Christmas lights? Still have wrapping paper on the table, floor -- ribbons and bows in the corners -- presents that didn't get sent?

No problem. It's okay. And here's why.

1) Gift wrapping stuff still out.

SOLUTION: If it's making you crazy, use my CHIP-N-CHUNK METHOD to sanity! Decide on one pile, one "CHUNK" of holiday cards, decorations, wrapping items, at a time. Schedule just 1/2 hour to 1 hour at a time and start "CHIPPING" away at it. Clean up and put away. They'll get done.

TIP: Stop the neurosis and stress causing ridicule over this right now! Don't criticize yourself before or during this process. Your home is your home. It's your space. No judgment. No big deal!

"But what will people think?" WHO CARES!!!! STOP IT!!!!

Don't despise now what you were so in love with and excited about just a month ago!

2) Gifts not given, sent, mailed, delivered. Might include thank you's from gifts received. Sometimes there are things we want to put into those gifts boxes for which we're still waiting.

SOLUTION: Don't wait to get the "just right" last things into the box. Box and tape it up. Mail it this week. Move it out. You can always send the rest soon after you compile it.

TIP: No apologies for belated anything. Very few people do it all "perfectly". Again, who cares?! I still have two get-togethers for post-Christmas with friends. We actually like it. It's after the compression of the holidays and we can sit and share holiday stories and enjoy our gifts and time together.

3) Lights still blinking? Decorations still up?
I put my 10 inch Christmas tree in its box (its "home") for the year last week. Okay, the box that it's in is still out on my office table "waiting" for a few more things to get put on the top shelf in the closet, but it's closer!

SOLUTION: Again, use my CHIP-N-CHUNK METHOD. Some people need to do it all in one day and get it done. Great! Others do CHUNK'S at time. Whatever works for you. It's in the "just do it" category. Plan out the time and start!

Option 2: Or... leave them up! This year I put up a string of chili pepper lights on my 2nd floor balcony. I light them every night, and, when it's been so terribly cold, I just leave them on 24/7 so I don't have to open the patio door and pull the plug! And since we have the weekly snow fall this year to cover them and make them picture perfect, they're so pretty. I love them. Of course they're not just Christmas lights, they can be used for lots of occasions (I like functional things like this that are middle-of-the-road-all-around-useable) . . . so I've decided I'll leave them up all winter. Hey, they're fun! I'm thinking, I may even leave them up into the "hot pepper" summer and... sure, why not, "chili pepper harvest" fall!! Have fun with your lights!

Bottom line, have fun with your holiday decorations and gift wrapping and all. Don't let yourself be frustrated with it after the fact. Make the whole process one. One of fun and joy.

Happy Undecorating 2007!

New Year's Resolutions? How's It Going So Far?

Kim Wolinski, MSW
"Dr. DeClutter"
www.drdeclutter.com

Did you set your New Year's Resolutions again this month? How's your motivation holding up?

It may be January 3rd or 30th when you read this, but what's for sure is that humans tend to follow the "path of least resistance." We too easily fall back into our normal, lifelong routines, habits and patterns (it's the human condition). Goals are put on the back burner, forgotten and joked about. Another year can go by without moving ahead one step toward our dreams and desires.

HABITS DIE HARD
Studies show that it takes 21-days to change a habit. I say, it takes 21-days of conscious effort to realize you even have a habit! Then, if you truly want to change it, the work starts! What is on your dream list? What would you like to change, lose, gain, increase, learn, experience, find, create, build, etc.?

3 STEPS TO YOUR DREAM
We need a few basic components to get and stay motivated and on course to realize our goals and dreams.
1. A plan.
2. Support.
3. New routines.

With just these three pieces of the dream
- machine in place, you'll be
- cranking out those new products
- singing up a storm on your new recording
- going to press with your new book
- starting up the company of your dreams
- starting that new job
- meeting our soul mate
- increasing your income
- moving into your new dream home
- gaining a new body
- spending more time with family, your children or yourself
... whatever you truly want.

BUT, I NEED HELP!
If you are short in the SUPPORT, INFORMATION and MOTIVATION Departments, I would love to help you get there from here, wherever there is.

I offer Personal Life Coaching by telephone and online.

You will get the help, guideance, brainstorming sessions, challenging assignments and exercises to move you out of out-dated routines and patterns and more to see the changes you want in any area of life.

Visit my Personal Coaching webpage to find out more at http://www.drdeclutter.com/personal_coaching.html . I look forward to meeting you and working with you to create your new life choices. If not now, when?

Happy New Year!

Don't Get Scammed Online or By Phone

Kim Wolinski, MSW
"Dr. DeClutter"
www.drdeclutter.com

If you're online, or use the telephone, there are plenty of ways criminals, "to be criminals" and "scammers", hundreds a year, are fishing the consumer (human) waters to engage you, manipulate and scare you into giving up your confidential information and steal your identity.

Here is an example of just one of many phone scams that's been around a while.

JURY DUTY SCAM
Someone calls pretending to be a court official who threateningly says a warrant has been issued for your arrest because you didn't show up for jury duty. The caller claims to be a jury coordinator. If you protest that you never received a summons for jury duty, the scammer asks you for your Social Security number and date of birth so he or she can verify the information and cancel the arrest warrant. Give out any of this information and bingo! Your identity has now been stolen.

The scam has been reported so far in 11 states, including Oklahoma , Illinois and Colorado. This (scam) is particularly insidious because they use intimidation over the phone to try to bully people into giving Information by pretending they're with the court system. The FBI and the Federal court system have issued nationwide alerts on their web sites, warning consumers about the fraud. Such matters are not handled by telephone. Tell them no, to take you off their list and hang up.

HOW CAN YOU CHECK IF THESE KIND OF SCAMS ARE REAL?
Phone systems, mail and the internet can be used for good or bad, like everything else. Let's concentrate on the good! When you think there's something "fishy" about an ad, call or email (start trusting your "guts" more!) there are several spam buster sites online to check out that you can depend on for the right information.

1. http://www.Snopes.com
For the specific scam above, the link is http://www.snopes.com/crime/fraud/juryduty.asp .
The FBI also has this one pegged, visit http://www.fbi.gov/pressrel/pressrel05/092805.htm .
2. http://www.korova.com/virus/hoax.htm
Please pass this on to everyone in your email address book. It is spreading fast so be prepared should you get this call.
3. http://www.scam.com/
4. Google "scams" and you'll find other interesting information and sites to help you too.

IN SUMMARY: Don't give out your Social Security#, Credit Card numbers, or other personal confidential information to any caller or invitation online.

Sidestep Holiday Hype for Gifts With Heart

Kim Wolinski, MSW
"Dr. DeClutter"
www.drdeclutter.com

"And he puzzled three hours, till his puzzler was sore.
Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn't before!
"Maybe Christmas," he thought, "doesn't come from a store.
Maybe Christmas perhaps means a little bit more!"
- Dr. Suess

Tired of holiday hype?

No matter what event or holiday you are celebrating that includes gift giving, you might just want to sit quietly and pick out something from a shopping trip in the "department stores of your mind!"

Even if it's a week before Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, a birthday, wedding or anniversary, think about making your gift instead of buying it at a store, keeping it simple and personal.

Consider the following:
- Bake muffins, a pie, a cake or cookies
- Cook a special meal
- Put together a picnic basket and invite others out for a hike in nature
- Create a scrapbook page of photos from something you did with them, or of their childhood or a special event (more ideas on scrapbooking here: www.scrappincabinet.com )
- Put together a music CD: download or sing songs that you know they like
- Make an ornament significant to them
- Write a song, poem or story for them

There a lots of small and fun ways to give from the heart this year and always.

TIP: Ask the what they really want and like that you could make for them, and do it!

Resolve to Evolve: Organize Thoughts Toward Inner Peace FIRST

"Our problems, both those we experience externally such as wars, crime and violence and those we experience internally as emotional and psychological suffering will not be solved until we address this underlying neglect of our inner dimension. That is why the great movements of the last hundred years and more--democracy, liberalism, socialism, and Communism--have all failed to deliver the universal benefits they were supposed to provide, despite many wonderful ideas. A revolution is called for, certainly, but not a political, an economic, or a technical revolution. We have had enough experience of these during the past century to know that a purely external approach will not suffice. What I propose is a spiritual revolution."

7 Steps to Holiday Giving: Gain Balance Over Excessive Sympathy for the Less Fortunate

Kim Wolinski, MSW
“Dr. DeClutter”
www.drdeclutter.com

Merry Christmas!
Happy Holidays!

Whatever you celebrate this time of year, it is meant to be a time of gladness, great happiness, togetherness, love and joy... abundance, giving and peace.

America is prosperous. The most prosperous nation in the world. No matter where you live in the world, if you have a roof over your head, a job, money in the bank and your health... you are prosperous!

But, not everyone is prosperous of course. There are street people and poverty stricken, hungry and those who meet misfortune and tragedy this time of year and all year round. Children and people from other nations are starving, live in fear, needy and dying.

Because of the strong contrast between Christmas and light and joy and some people's daily or immediate harsh realities, the hardtimes are especially poignant during the holidays.

How do you deal with this dichotomy?

Here are some tips to help you and "them", whoever "they" are gain balance now and all year round.

1) Make a decision.
Take the time to decide what is true about your ability to contribute humanitarian causes.
2) Choose.
Choose one or more causes each holiday season and give from your ability to give -- money and/or time.
3) Reality check.
You cannot save the world during the holidays or anytime in your life, that's not your job. But, you can make a difference in a very personal and small way somewhere. Make it.
4) Give and let go.
Write your check. Give. Let go. Don't judge yourself or others for the amount of time or money given. Give and let go.
5) Plan for next year.
Pre-plan for next year. Give monthly to one or two chosen causes and stop the guilt that many people feel during the holidays.
6) Or, jump in!
If you want to really get involved in a charity or cause of any kind, then do!

Bottomline: Don't get caught in-between feeling guilty about the roof over your head, food on your table, etc. -- namely, your abundance and prosperity -- and angry because you feel guilty about others' needs and the onslaught of advertisement for donations.

7) Get off mailing and call lists.
Choose your causes of contributions and get off all other lists. This saves them money and time too!

This Holiday, Enjoy Your Extended vs. "Expended" Family

Kim Wolinski, MSW
“Dr. DeClutter”
www.drdeclutter.com

Do you sometimes feel exhausted when it comes to spending time with your family and extended family? Do you sometimes feel yourself being too extended as in "stretched" to your mental, emotional and sometimes physical limits? Then you feel "expended" - as in tired and used up.

Don't miss out on the joy of the season, of spending time with your precious family. No matter how well, or not, you get along, they are your family!

To "expend" means to spend, to use up, as in "expendable": able or intended to be sacrificed, as in war. Are you expend-able? I hope not!

This holiday season (and everyday) make sure that you are enjoying your extended family... not using them up and certainly, not letting yourself be used up either!

TIP: Remember, "We teach people how to treat us!"

If you teach people to take advantage of you -- of your kindness, of your being responsible and accountable, being fun and happy, being a giver... guess what!... they will! Not because they are bad people, or "users," but because humans are pattern seeking creatures. We like patterns, we depend on patterns of behavior to feel in control, comfortable and safe. Your job is to keep from creating or supporting patterns that keep you or others from being "expended"; to keep your energy and very life from being sacrificed.

That means you may need to kindly say "no" to some things along the way in order to say "yes" to your needs first. Yes, first. You - first.

And, no, others who have been patterned to take advantage of, to be needy, demanding and helpless will not like it... "Oh, well!"

Your challenge here is to figure out what you really want. What you are saying "yes" to so that you can say "no" with gentle and easy confidence. No fight. No resistence. No war.

Stay at-center this holiday season, no matter what happens! This too, it all, will pass!

Happy Holidays! Kim

How to Organize and Manage Out-Of-Control Paper

Kim Wolinski, MSW
Dr. DeClutter
www.DrDeClutter.com

Paper, paper everywhere… over 80% of the paper most people have is either out-of-date or will never be used again.

THE 4 D’S OF EFFECTIVE PAPER MANAGEMENT
A) Do it
B) Delay it (File it in an action file or archive file)
C) Delegate it
D) Dump it

TIP: OPEN MAIL OVER “FILE 13”

Quickly open daily mail right over the wastebasket, or recycling container. Dump everything unnecessary, then, sort the rest immediately – so it doesn't have a chance to pile up.

If you are in a business environment where files must be shared, the problem of the paper monster is even worse. A great resource for controlling and organizing paper chaos is nationally known speaker and Professional Organizer, Barbara Hemphill, author of best selling books Taming the Paper Tiger at Work, and ... at Home. 5 Steps to Stop INNER CLUTTER, and Take Back Your Present

Kim Wolinski, MSW

Dr. DeClutter ... www.DrDeClutter.com

Inner Clutter is that “white noise” in our heads, racing thoughts, mental distractions, anger, old baggage, worry, guilt, judgments and negative thinking, jumping to the past and into the future, limiting us from being really “in our lives” in the present.

Whether you know it or not, Inner Clutter controls you every moment. Inner Clutter wears you out, makes you tired, depressed, steals your time and energy, takes you away from your family and friends and makes you physically ill. The good news… you have the power to change this.

The following five steps will help you take control and make every moment better, and more importantly, a create a better life right now.

1. Breathe
Inner Clutter can be stopped amazingly quickly by just breathing!

When you feel frustrated, your mind won’t stop racing.

DO THIS: Stop for even 2-3 seconds, close your eyes and take a deep breath. Medically this is also very important. Deep breathing gets the necessary oxygen and blood to your brain so that you can think better and therefore make better decisions, letting go of stress.

2. Quiet your mind

No matter what our age, we all need quiet time. Time to reflect, to hear our thoughts, to take care of ourselves, to stop the mental chatter, to redecide and think clear thoughts about what’s really important. Make sure you are making this time for yourself daily, even if it’s just for a few undisturbed minutes to get re-centered.

3. Listen to your thoughts

Marcus Aurelius said, "A man's life is what his thoughts make of it."

Scary, huh?! Really listen to what your thoughts are saying and doing in your head. Examine them and make choices and decisions to deal with them. Don’t just let them wonder around uncontrolled. They are after all, “your” thoughts!

DO THIS: When you sense racing thoughts in your mind stop, listen to what they are saying and capture them in mid-air. Grab one and wrestle it down onto a piece of paper with a pen or pencil. Write it out and see what is actually valid and true about it. If it’s not true, thank it so very much for being so entertaining for so long! And then, let it go.

Every time it tries to come back and create Inner Clutter, acknowledge it and let it go. This is also called, “getting out of your own way!” On the other hand, if the thought is true, do something about it. Your mind is not meant to be used for a holding tank for millions of confused thoughts -- yours and/or others.

4. Define problems as challenges seeking a solution

Vernon Howard, a mystic writer, stated, “Most people merely rearrange their problems, but with self-insight, you can end them.” Every “problem” and negative “drama” is an experience, a thought or an issue waiting to be challenged for a solution. The key here is to stop resisting it, stop resisting “what is.”

Let it go and start seeing and knowing for a positive change by releasing it. Again, sometimes we need to put proactive effort into it, other times we need to just let it go and let it change as it will.

5. Take care of yourself FIRST

“What other’s think of me is none of my business,” ~Terry Cole-Whittaker

Much Inner Clutter is from and about others. Your job, foremost, is to take care of yourself. Think of it this way; you’re on an airplane, the Flight Attendant explains that if the plane experiences problems the oxygen masks may come down from their holding bins in above your head. The next instructions are not just about your plane ride, but all of life… listen closely. “PUT THE OXYGEN MASK ON YOURSELF FIRST, THEN ON YOUR CHILDREN OR TO HELP SOMEONE NEXT TO YOU.”

Why? Because, if you’re gasping, struggling just to breathe, or worse, dead, you’re no help to anyone else! Get it? Take care of yourself first every day, and THEN you are better for everyone else as you choose to offer your help and energy.

So, the next time your find yourself up and running here, running there, going through your morning, unaware of what to do next, where things are, who you are and your mind chatter is winning…stop and do at least one of these five steps to declutter and re-organize Inner Clutter for good.

Permission to Think “Expansively”, Not “Expensively”

Kim Wolinski, MSW
“Dr. DeClutter” www.drdeclutter.com

Permission to Think “Expansively”, Not “Expensively”

Do you have items in your house that you really don’t want, but they’re still "worth something?" You might think to wait and collect more stuff and have a garage or yard sale. Maybe sell it on Ebay. Or, maybe… .

I want you to think less about “how much you can get for it (maybe)” – expensively – and start thinking “expansively.” The “expense” incurred in trying to be savvy and getting a couple bucks from something needs to weighed against the “expense” it costs you in time, money (gasoline!) and energy. What else could you be thinking about and spending time on that would be so much better?

Option: Expand your vision of life. Give it away! Yes, give it to someone who will appreciate it and use it gratefully. This raises the worth of the item(s) to “full value” and “feels” good too. You have now made a great, kind and generous gift and offering to the world of another.

Bottom line -- don’t let your possessions possess you!

When you “let go” of something, anything, you open a vacuum and “make room” for something better to come in its place. I’ve watched this happen in my life and others with great fascination. It’s kind of like if you want to redecorate a room you need to clean it out and shine it up to ready it for the new colors, flooring, paint, wallpaper, curtains, furniture, etc. My friend Sherry, for example, had cleaned out her closets to ready for the “better” to fill it back up. I’m glad that I could be one of the channels for this. She has a great new and different wardrobe now, hardly spending a dime!

(I decluttered and let go of my boyfriend last year!!!)

WARNING: After you do this a few times and see how magically it works, you’ll want to get rid of lots of things!!

Organize to Keep Your Identity from Being Stolen

Kim Wolinski, MSW
"Dr. DeClutter" www.DrDeClutter.com

Concerned about your identity being stolen? Most people don't even realize they are victims of identity theft until it is too late. Only 11% of respondents in a Federal Trade Commission survey were aware their personal info had been taken before discovering they were victims. That's because credit thieves keep coming up with new ways to get your information.

Holidays are an especially targeted time of year as people are busy with children, shopping, thinking of lots of other things instead of concern for their purses, wallets, paper and such.

Don't be the next statistic. Get organized with these simple steps to protect your identity.

1. Shred all documents with personal information on them.

2. Don't write down where others will easily see or find it, and don't give out your PIN.

3. Don't carry all of your credit cards with you.

4. Sign your credit cards as soon as you receive them. Or, sign with CID (See I.D.) so that you will be asked to show your drivers license or other photo ID to protect you.

5. Never carry your Social Security card with you.

6. Don't have your Social Security number or telephone number printed on your checks.

7. If your state uses your Social Security number as your driver's license number, ask that another number be used instead.

8. Don't give out personal information on the phone, on the Internet or by mail unless you initiate the contact.

9. Pay attention to credit card bills to ensure no unauthorized charges are being made.

10. Watch for monthly bills. If they fail to reach you, call the company to find out why.

11. Choose passwords carefully. Avoid the obvious, such as your birth date, phone number or
mother's maiden name.

12. Safeguard your computer by updating your virus protection regularly and using a firewall program. Don't download files sent by strangers. Look for Web site privacy policies when buying something online. Don't store financial information on your laptop, and delete personal information when disposing of a computer.

If you do become a victim, cancel your accounts, report the crime to the police, notify the credit bureaus -- Experian (888-397-3742), Equifax (800-525-6285) and TransUnion (800-680-7289) -- and get help from nonprofit counseling groups, such as Call for Action .

Organize Your Thoughts Before Giving and Receiving Gifts

Kim Wolinski, MSW
"Dr. DeClutter" www. DrDeClutter.com

I think it's important that when we give and receive gifts that we organize our thoughts and emotions before they are opened, before our mouths engage, blurting out something rude, unfeeling, negating or embarrassing.

GIFT GIVING
It's important too that when you're giving a gift not to negate your giving. Don't put yourself or your gift down. Give with an open heart and with love, for yourself and the receiver.

Seven Things You Shouldn't Say About a Christmas Gift You've Given

7. I just know this belongs in your house! Here, I'll show you where.
6. It was on sale!
5. Not very many people like these, but I thought you would.
4. I had three of these, I thought you might like one.
3. Oh, I just picked it up at the last minute.
2. I made it, but it's not that great.
1. You're probably not going to like it.

GIFT RECEIVING
Everyone's done it, or thought it, at least once when receiving a gift. Here are some gems to delete from your holiday gift receiving vocabulary.

Seven Things You Probably Shouldn't Say About a Christmas Gift You Don't Like

7. Hey! There's a gift!
6. Oh, look at this. I've heard about this on the news.
5. This is perfect for wearing around the basement.
4. Oh, you didn't have to! Really, you didn't have to.
3. I love it -- I'll put it away so it doesn't get ruined.
2. Oh!? I've seen these before but didn't know what they were! What are they?
1. This is great. I know somebody who'd really like this!

Assume... that all gifts are given with care, love, friendship or just plain old kindness, so accept them with kindness, surprise and joy. If they were given for any other reason, accept them with kindness, surprise and joy anyway. Period.

TIP: If you don't want gifts, let all your friends and family know months ahead of time, or tell them exactly what you like (Think "perishable gifts" like food, restaurant gifts certificates, movie or theatre tickets, concerts tickets, etc.) or give them the address of your favorite charity and let them donate the money they would have spent on your gift to charity. Bottom-line, make gift-giving easy and kind.

Happy Holidays to you brimming with love, kindness and joy!

Holidays and Children -- Organize for Holiday Safety

KEEPING AN EYE ON SAFETY
Submitted by Kay Rosenthal PhD, RN Director

"For many children, each year, the holidays are interrupted by a trip to the hospital emergency room. Prevent Blindness America (PBA) reports that in 2003, there were more than 10,000 toy and play activity eye injuries in children under the age of 14. The PBA further reports that 90% of these injuries were preventable. Unfortunately, each year some of these easily preventable injuries will result in blindness.

So, choose toys wisely. Prevent Blindness America recommends gift-givers follow these tips for choosing safe toys:

1) Look for toys that have the letters "ASTM."
This means that the product meets the national safety standards set by the American Society for Testing and Materials.(Many toy makers follow safety guidelines, some do not).

2) Inspect toys for sturdy construction.
Children’s toys should be durable and be able to with stand impact. (Shattering pieces are a recipe for disaster).

3) Store toys properly after play to avoid trips and falls onto sharp objects.
Check the lenses and frames of "dress-up" and sunglasses. Many less sturdy models can break resulting in an eye injury. Always avoid toys with sharp areas or rods. (Stay clear of toy weapons).

4) Avoid toys with flying objects or that shoot - especially BB guns and slingshots. (Toy guns are responsible for the largest amount of eye injuries in children).

5) Never give toys with small parts to young children. Young kids tend to put things in their mouths increasing the risk of choking.

6) Read directions carefully and follow suggested age levels to ensure the toy is appropriate for your child’s ability and age.

7) Explain the proper use of a toy to your child. A simple explanation of how not to use a toy and enforcing it prevents dangerous misuse of some toys.

If a child does sustain a cut or puncture of the eye or eyelid, knowing what to do could help to prevent vision loss: PBA lists the following instructions to help save valuable time.

1) DO NOT allow the child to rub the eye.
2) DO NOT try to remove an object that is stuck in the eye. (This could further damage delicate eye tissue) Cover the eye with a rigid shield without applying pressure. The bottom half of a paper cup can be used. See a doctor at once".

Enjoy the holidays and keep these eye safety tips in mind while you finish your holiday shopping.

Organize Your Thoughts, Change Your Life

Kim Wolinski, MSW

Organize Your Thoughts, Change Your Life

“Inner” organizing, the decluttering of our inner house (mind) is actually more important than organizing your physical house. Of course, clutter of the mind and outer stuff and things are connected.

Have you ever used the child’s toy Etch A Sketch®? If you have you know that you turn it upside down and shake it, covering the glass for the next sketch session, all fresh and new. In other words, “a clean slate.” We need to do the same kind of thing with our minds.

”What happens when a confused mind tries to find an answer?
It finds a confused answer.
What happens when a confused mind makes a decision?
It makes a confused decision.
Don't you think it essential to clear your mind?"
~ Vernon Howard, Treasury of Positive Answers

Whether we actually turn ourselves upside down to do it or not is a personal decision!… but it is important on a daily basis to “shake off” thoughts and “sketches” – pictures and memories, worry and fear – that have written their lines and grooves and ruts into our minds. These paths of least resistance become a major distraction to the peace and flow that we should feel more often than not.

Stop. Make and take time to stop thinking. Meditate at least once a day for 15-20 minutes in the morning before your day and decisions and choices begin to collide with realities, the clock, others and emotions. The more you meditate you will find short and long term benefits from lowered blood pressure to a quieter mind and a more balanced life.

With this daily starting point it will be much easier to declutter and keep your thoughts organized and flow the life changes that will inevitably happen.

Want to play a little Etch A Sketch® right now? Go here! http://www.etch-a-sketch.com/

CHOOSE A HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Kim Wolinski, MSW
"Dr. DeClutter" www.drdeclutter.com

Are you going to have a wonderful Thanksgiving?

Yes. The answer is "yes!"

No matter what you have planned, what actually happens, what doesn't happen and what you wish had happened... you can be happy anyway! How? CHOOSE.

"Happiness is not a state to arrive at
but rather a manner of traveling."
~ Samuel Johnson

No matter what's happening at any moment, no matter what plans you have or had and what ends up happening, each one of us can CHOOSE our thoughts and ultimately the path of our emotions. You can CHOOSE to be at peace, happy, grateful, joyful even excited and ecstatic... if you want to!

In choosing happiness, gratitude, hope and love in the face of chaos, frustrations, uncertainty, loss, sadness, grief and even tragedy, we discover that as holocaust survivor Viktor Frankl says, "...the last of all human freedoms is the freedom to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances -- to choose one's own way".

Many blissings for a wonderful holiday week. CHOOSE to be grateful, thankful and happy this Thanksgiving.

Exercise:
Before Thanksgiving Day, take a moment and write a list of all of the good you experience in your life. From your freedom, to being able to drive, to the ability to buy pretty much what you want and need 24/7, to your health, family and friends, job and interests, being able to follow your interests and creativity, to sunshine and Autumn weather.... don't stop, keep writing. Write for 10 minutes non-stop. The time will go by in a blink and hopefully you'll find many more items to add to your list and sit even longer.

Now -- take this list to your Thanksgiving gathering and share a few items. Ask others to do it too and see how much you all have to be thankful for. These lists can spark great conversations and sharing too.

Don't let another opportunity go by with an unmindful "Grace. Let's eat and football's on..." kind of Thanksgiving. STOP, BE QUIET and CHOOSE to be grateful. Really "feel" grateful.

I'm grateful that I can type, that there is Internet and Blogs, that I have a peaceful home, that I have work I enjoy, that I have a gzillion wonderful friends, that my family loves me, that I've lost 20 lbs.! and so much more! Make this list ongoing and remember to stop, be quiet and choose to be and grateful everyday.

Happy Grateful Thanksgiving of Choice,

Kim

Stop Clutter from Coming into Your Life

Kim Wolinski, MSW
"Dr. DeClutter" www.drdeclutter.com

During the upcoming weeks you may be bombarded with pamphlets, flyers and whatever else comes handed to you at the doors of your grocery store (feed the poor); at work (give); at your place of worship or community (upcoming events) and more. Flyers. Pieces of colored paper promoting something important. Really?

Yes, well... some of these things ARE important and you may even want to be a part of them, donate or whatever. However, you don't have to take the flyer to do it. The plan here is to stop more unwanted, unsolicited pieces of paper from cluttering up your car, purse, briefcase, pockets and house.

I've learned that the easiest way for me to do this is to keep my hands in my pockets or behind my back. I "used to" be one of those people who just automatically accepted stuff that was put in front of me. The first couple of times I didn't accept those pieces of paper I felt odd, kind of wrong, like something was missing. I got over it!

It's okay not to accept pieces of paper, including business cards! It's okay to listen to the pitch. It's great to give and participate. Be selective. Do all accepting and giving from an open and loving heart, not begrudgingly or from duty.

Have a wonderful (less cluttered) holiday season!

Kim

Go On A Shopping Trip – In Your Own Home!

Kim Wolinski, MSW

Go On A Shopping Trip – In Your Own Home!

Okay, here it is!! Just days before that massive shopping extravaganza weekend after Thanksgiving.

I want to offer you a very cool tip on finding stuff for free!! Yes FREE!! Whether you're shopping for the holidays or any event... save money, time and nerves the next time you need to shop for clothing, especially when you have children.

How?

1. Declutter.
Yes, you heard me! When you declutter piles and heaps and boxes of stuff and things in closets, garage floors and attics you'll be amazed at what you'll find that you forgot to give in the past or bought two of along the way, someone gave you and you'll never use, or... whatever!

Create a "Gift Box" and put these items in it for "regifting". Yes, REGIFTING! Why spend more money and mental anquish over things you already have!

2. Box and Label for Future FREE Stuff!
When you get and stay organized by boxing and labeling you seasonal clothing – and children’s clothing that can be worn the next year by the same or another younger child– you will save yourself plenty of time, energy and money by going into your storage boxes and bins and finding most of what you may need “before” you go store shopping.

Yes, we already own most of what we need; we just don’t remember where we put it! So, the more organized you are and the better categorizing and labeling you do when organizing, you will find much of what you need right in your own square-foot-heaven.

This includes all kinds of items, like tape, pens, batteries, flashlights, supplies of all kinds, gloves, etc. When you keep items in “categories” and “contained” in boxes, tubs, bins and baskets, and “label” them so that everyone in the house can find them and put them back when done using the items (teach everyone!) you’ll waste less money, time and mental energy trying to locate and use what you already own.

Organize and Complete Your To-Do List Faster In “Chunks”

Kim Wolinski, MSW

Organize and Complete Your To-Do List Faster In “Chunks”

Do you make lists? I do. I LOVE lists! Okay, and you can tell me… do you ever do something that’s not on your list and then write it down just so you can cross it off? I do! I LOVE lists! Doesn’t crossing an item off as “complete” feel great! High five! YEA LISTS! (Okay, now you know, it doesn’t take much to make me happy!!)

So, the depressing thing about lists is to look at items that are large projects, which extend over weeks and months. It can feel overwhelming. “Where do I start!”

THE KEY to successfully dealing with large or long projects is to “chunk” them down. That’s right; divide them into doable “chunks.”

Breaking these projects down into smaller manageable steps of 30 minutes, 1 or 2 hours each, like your other smaller projects, will get you done in “chunks” at a time. Then, get your pen out!! – YES, you’ll get to scratch off one “chunk” at a time and get that same great feeling of completion and satisfaction as with small projects. High five!! Ahhhh, I LOVE lists! Have I said that?!

Now, you can look at your TO-DO LIST and just see doable, objective projects that can be “seen as finished” more easily. And, when you can “see” a project finished, it is much easier to start on and stay with “to” the finish.

Organize Your Weight Loss Program With My 8 Glasses-8 Ounces Tip

Kim Wolinski, MSW
“Dr. DeClutter” www.drdeclutter.com

Organize Your Weight Loss Program With My 8 Glasses - 8 Ounces Tip

Do you get your 8 glasses of water down each day? You know the drill!… 8 glasses of water, 8 ounces each. Water only. No pop. No coffee. No tea. No juice. They don’t count. Water.

Do you forget sometimes? So do I. And, do you forget and keep sitting at a computer or at a repetitive job until your legs, thighs and behind are numb? So do I. But, I don't forget to eat often due to low blood sugar, that’s a good thing.

So, the other day my creative little mind figured that I could actually take out (better than kill) two birds with one stone. I created a lab project for myself, and it works pretty well.

NOTE: I have to say here that I’m not one of those people who likes the 64 plus ounce bottle, jug or gigoondous mugs. I like real glasses that hold around two cups of water. My project took on a title because everything I do gets an acronym or title really fast. I call it "8 Glasses-8 Ounces."

8 GLASSES – 8 OUNCES
I fill 8 glasses with 8 ounces of water each in the morning from my filtered water pitcher. Then, I only bring one glass at a time into my office. I generally watch the clock and every hour or so drink that glass of water and go get another. SO -- I "have to get up" and walk into the kitchen (I work out of my home office) to get the next glass.

What this does is helps me know that I’ve drank them, no wondering, as well as gets me off the chair and away from the computer screen long enough to stretch and get blood and oxygen moving through my body parts. I usually drink more than 8 glasses a day, but this absolutely gets me the minimum and some necessary exercise (I’ve been known to hardly move from the computer for over 15 hours! – Bad, bad, bad, bad, bad!).

“The preservation of health is a duty.
Few seem conscious that there is such a thing as physical morality.”

~ Herbert Spencer

Our bodies are made up of 98% water. Our brain is 76% water, lungs – 90% and blood plasma – 98%. Water hydrates our bodies and keeps everything “moving,” flushes toxins out of the body, assists in digestion, circulation and excretion. I’ve heard from a fitness trainer that we should drink “3 to 4 liters” of water a day. Yeah, well, I’m pretty happy doing the 8+ right now!

Inner Clutter: Keys to Control Your Mind

Kim Wolinski, MSW
“Dr. DeClutter” http://www.drdeclutter.com/

Inner Clutter: Keys to Control Your Mind
http://www.drdeclutter.com/personal_coaching.html

“Clutter” comes in many forms. Do you have unwanted thoughts and feelings running through your mind and body all day long? Do you find it almost impossible to stop them? Do you feel like you need "a miracle?" Well, that would mean you’re human! Welcome to planet Earth, eh?

Worry, stress, judgments, resentment, anxiety (specific or free-floating), thinking about the future or the past, hearing a lot of “shoulds,” “ought to have,” “now what will I do?” and more. They are our thoughts. They start as we awake in the morning and we don’t know when the last one shuts off as we drift off to sleep when our dreams take over the night shift, processing our day and thoughts on whole new levels.

When thoughts show up they can be as small as a pesky gnat or as powerful as a buffalo stampede between our ears. If we don’t practice measures of controlling them, they can spiral out of control and into a deluge of gloomy thoughts, depression, hopelessness and compounded anxiety, addictions (soft and hard) and illness.

Do you think about the world’s problems… on top of your day at the office, your children, your spouse or family, your health, finances, safety and much more? Sometimes it feels almost impossible to stop the tape loop whirling in our brains, replaying images, words and feelings over and over again. Over time it becomes not only emotionally draining, but affects our immune and adrenal systems creating the opportunity for stress related illness and disease.

97% of all doctors’ office visits are stress related! Unwanted thoughts and emotions that persist can do great damage as they distract you from your life. Luckily, there are ways to take control of your thoughts and feelings attached to them; consciously releasing them by re-training your mind to refocus its attention on more positive subjects.

KEY: Take back your attention and to refocus it.

HOW? I call this process “Red Monkey Stoppers.”

Let’s start with Red Monkeys! Right now, DO NOT think of a RED MONKEY! How’d you do? Did you think of a RED MONKEY?! Of course you did. Our minds are set up to think of colors, nouns, images, forms and sounds, plus, things with which we are already acquainted. Your mind goes right to the RED and the MONKEY. Flew right by the “Simon Says” statement, “DON’T.”
So, when you’re thinking, “I don’t want to think about being ill,” “I’m so tired of thinking about money problems,” etc., your mind flies right past the “don’t want” part and goes for the nouns, ideas and concepts that it knows. It goes right for fear.

So, how to you STOP THE RED MONKEYS? Use “thought stoppers.”

THOUGHT STOPPER TECHNIQUES
These can be one word or a few that you use as soon as you become conscious that your mind is in “monkey mind.” You can say it out loud or just in your mind to “wake up” to consciousness and move out of the unconscious programmed habitual loops of thought. You can say, “STOP!” or “That's enough!”

Now, like decluttering a room of what you DON’T WANT, you will clean it up and then put in new furniture and redecorate with what you WANT! You must “replace” your programmed habitual loop of thought with something new, something positive, supportive and healthy for you.

JOY STARTERS
I call these RESET statements and thoughts, “JOY STARTERS!”

This is "miracle working" in a small but powerful step... a technique to shift your view, perception and emotions. This can be a word, “Peace;” a phrase, “All is well;” a song lyric tune (even one you make up!), anything that distracts, detours and deminishes the habitual thoughts onto another track that is better for you. If you’re more visual, use not only more positive words, but choose images in your mind of past wonderful and happy experiences or future desired ones.

KEY: Never try to “think away” an unwanted thought because you will simply strengthen it.
You’ll be “feeding the monster!” Can you say King Kong?

PREPARE YOUR MIRACLE TOOLBOX
It’s best to prepare for times when “you will” experience rampant programmed old thoughts and want to be ready for them. Create a toolbox of positive, affirming options so that you’re ready “when” the RED MONKEYS swing in and try to steal your "flow!"

Other ways to stop looping thoughts include: Recite the alphabet, tackle some chores, dance, sing, read a poem, pray, chant, do a puzzle, exercise (which released hormones that may reduce unwanted thoughts), or perform a conscious breathing meditation.

It’s absolutely natural to have out of control thoughts. Using the ideas I’ve offered here however will put you into a very small group of humans who are willing to moment-by-moment listen to their thoughts whizzing by, catch the one’s that are taking them off track and change the direction they are headed. These techniques will get easier and easier with time and practice. And, you will be amazed at the many "bonus benefits" you’ll experience using them.

COULD YOU USE A MIRACLE?
Want to lose weight? Make more money? Have more fun? Find more peace? Change your life direction? Start a new project? Attract a new relationship, health or wealth into your life? Where will you be in 6 weeks (6 months, a year, 5 or 10?) if you don't start now? You can start anytime, why not today? Become a Miracle Worker in your own life!

LEARN MORE ABOUT TAKING BACK YOUR MIND AND LIFE
If you would like to learn to use this and many more tools for your Consciousness Building Toolbox for a better life, you will want to work with me to rediscover your authentic self and live the life you are meant to live. http://www.drdeclutter.com/personal_coaching.html
